This classic 10 Day Sydney Reef and Rock tour is our most popular itinerary. The Great Barrier Reef, Ayers Rock (properly referred to under its Aboriginal name of Uluru) and Sydney are the most iconic destinations in Australia. In your 10 days of travel you’ll gain an in-depth understanding and real appreciation of what each of them offer to visitors from the US. The team at Australia Vacations will guide you in selecting the very best experiences available at each destination and the best accommodation choices to suit your budget.
Days 1-4 Sydney
Sydney and the surrounding countryside includes famous beaches like Bondi and Manly, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, The beautiful Blue Mountains and The Sydney Opera House. It’s a thriving cultural center with great concert halls and galleries, museums and amazing restaurants and cafes. Wine lovers will enjoy the nearby Hunter Valley. We’ll guide you in making the best choices according to your own interests and preferences
Days 4 – 8 The Great Barrier Reef
From Sydney, you’ll fly north, to Cairns in the state of Queensland. You’ll be facing some tempting options on how you could spend your next few days. Snorkelling or diving on the Reef or simply enjoying the view from a glass bottomed boat will be the obvious “must do’s” but other surprises await. There are island resorts of all standards, from back-packing to super luxury. Inland, there are huge ancient rainforests, along the coast some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, cruises on the reef and opportunities to explore the nearby hinterlands. We’ll work with you to make sure your choices are the best for you.
Days 8 – 11 Darwin & the Kakadu National Park
We continue travelling north, with a 2 ½ flight to the city of Darwin, gateway to the lush and tropical ‘Top End’ of Australia’s Northern Territory. This is the heart of Crocodile Dundee country. A 90 mile drive east of Darwin is Kakadu, the largest National Park in Australia and the country’s first to be included on the World Heritage list. For many visitors, the main attraction of the Kakadu / Arnhemland region is wildlife. Kakadu is home to more than 75 species of reptiles and more than a third of all Australian bird species. It is an area of spectacular natural beauty – where lush forest, dramatic gorges and cascading waterfalls dominate the landscape.
Some suggested Activities
Days 11 – 14 The Red Centre, Uluru (Ayers Rock), Alice Springs
We now fly into the very heart of the Australian Outback to see Australia’s most extraordinary site, the massive sandstone monolith called Uluru (Ayers Rock). But there’s much more than just ‘The Rock’ to marvel at. The surrounding desert landscapes, the gorges and oases within them and fascinating culture of the local Aboriginal people provide fascinating backdrops to this remote and barren land.
When to go: Mid-April to mid-October, although temperatures in Sydney are likely to be crisp.
